WARNER ROBINS -- Two weeks to prepare. Three weekends of games. One championship banner.

For 12 kids, the Georgia Rookie Ball Championship was the culmination of the hard work players put in to make it happen.

On June 22, the Warner Robins American Little League West 7-8 year old All Stars made it come through with a 12-2 win against Peachtree City Little League.

Winning the championship game was the West’s 10th win in so many games. They were undefeated during District 5, South Sectional and the state tournaments.

With only two weeks to teach the 7-8 year old children how to pitch in this kid-pitch league, now in its second season, the players showed their maturity by making routine plays in the infield and catching the fly balls in the outfield.

The talent of the players makes manager Kevin Pike’s job easy, he said.

Pike credits his coaches, Brian Harrelson and Sy Jones, with helping him come up with a plan before each game.

“Sy Jones was the mastermind,” Pike said.

As a reward, the players were treated to a pizza dinner at Stevi B’s.

The team outscored its opponents 158-31 in 10 games.

“Every kid put forth the effort,” Pike said, and it showed on the scoreboard.

His son Gavin had three home runs during the tournament.

Troy Carpenter was the starting pitcher most of the game. He and Bryce Harrelson gave up just two hits in the championship game.

One of his father’s sayings has stuck with the players throughout the tournament. The “never give up” mantra was repeated again and again for the young players.

“This was our dream and our goal,” Pike said.
