P&Z approves portable toilets, trash container storage on Hawkinsville Road

The owners of a business wanting to store portable toilets and trash containers on Hawkinsville Road convinced Macon’s zoning commission the operation would be clean and orderly.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission approved a conditional-use permit at 7105 Hawkinsville Road for A-OK Portables LLC, owned by husband and wife Mark and Lee Insley.

The Insleys plan to operate a contractor’s storage yard for portable toilets and roll-off trash containers on the 7.3-acre site. A commercial trailer and carport would be installed to provide office space and space to park trucks overnight.

No one attending the meeting objected to the planned use.

The business currently serves 26 counties in Georgia from service yards in Byron and Richmond Hill. The company plans to move the Byron operation to Macon, Lee Insley said.

“We’ve been surveying the area for over a year, and we’ve looked in Houston County, Peach County and Bibb County, and we determined (this location) was the best,” she said.

The toilets, most of which are used at construction sites, are cleaned at the job site before they are brought back to the storage yard, Mark Insley said. The company also has some special-event toilets used for parties or concerts.

The trash containers, which are mainly used for construction material, would be empty when they are at the yard unless the landfill is closed when a truck is full, Lee Insley said.

“We keep it organized,” Mark Insley said. “Everything has its place. ... There is no smell. The toilets come back clean.”

The Insleys agreed to put the containers on the property where they would mostly be screened by natural vegetation or by the office and carport.
