Venessa Fluellen, owner
Ellens Home and Gift Gallery, 2328 Ingleside Ave., Macon, 744-0050 (store); 478-390-3374 (cell).
How long have you been in business?: A Macon native, Fluellen left a furniture store sales job and opened her home decor shop in 2004. After operating in various locations, she opened the current spot in Ingleside Village in March.
What do you like most about your job?: As a business owner, what I like most is creating hours of operation that are ideal for my family and (me).
The shop is open Wednesday through Saturday so Fluellen can make doctors appointments earlier in the week for a son who is battling Crohns disease. She also sells her products on www.etsy.com.
Being your own boss affords you time off whenever needed without complaints and criticism. I also like being surrounded by all of the beautiful items in the shop, as well as offering affordable products that enhance and add beauty to ones home.
What is your specialty?: Fluellen, 44, who has been sewing since she was 14, specializes in handmade accent pillows, tablecloths, table runners and decorative throws. Her inventory also includes designer fabrics, occasional furniture, pictures, mirrors, lamps, decorative accessories, rugs, jewelry and handbags.
What are your future plans?
My goal is to expand my square footage and inventory, which will include larger furniture pieces, home accessories and fabrics.
