Business wants to store portable toilets, trash containers on Hawkinsville Road

Permission is being sought to use a 7-acre tract on Hawkinsville Road as storage for a portable toilet and trash container business.

Mark Insley with A-OK Portables LLC has filed an application for a conditional-use permit at 7105 Hawkinsville Road, near Griffin Road, to operate a contactor’s storage yard for portable toilets and roll-off trash containers.

The application is expected to be discussed Monday during the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission meeting.

The business currently serves 26 counties in Georgia from service yards in Byron and in Richmond Hill, according to a letter from the company. It plans to move the Byron operation to Macon.

“The existing fence is a chain-link fence and will not provide screening or buffering of the units, therefore the use is not a permitted use,” according to the commission’s staff report.

A commercial trailer and a carport will be installed to provide office space and overnight parking of trucks, the report said.

In another matter, an application for a conditional-use permit has been filed by Stuart Hindmarsh, an attorney for Wal-Mart, to allow a medical clinic inside the Wal-Mart store at 6020 Harrison Road.

The clinic would provide diagnosis and treatment, education and routine lab tests. No surgical procedures or X-rays will be performed, and no inpatient or overnight care will be provided.

The clinic will be located in the vestibule area between the front of the store and the cash registers. The clinic would be staffed by either a physician or certified/licensed nurse practitioners with physician oversight as required by law.

According to Wal-Mart’s website: “Each medical clinic located in a store is owned and operated by an independent company that is not affiliated with Wal-Mart ... and the company does not exercise any control over the provision of health-care services at the clinics.”

The matter has been put on the agenda for ratification, which usually means it would not be discussed by the commission during the meeting.

The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the 10th floor conference room, Willie C. Hill City Hall Annex, 682 Cherry St.
