FORT VALLEY -- In a unanimous vote, the Peach County school board approved Daryl Fineran as the next superintendent of schools.
His contract is for three years. He will earn $135,000 per year, the same as outgoing Superintendent Joe Ann Denning, said Jamie Johnson, the board chairman. Fineran made $118,000 as superintendent of Wayne County schools.
Hes probably the best candidate that we could get at this time, Johnson said.
Tom Morrill, the Peach Chamber of Commerce president, said he understood the board was under pressure and working against time with Dennings retirement -- and school board elections in November. He approved of appointing Fineran.
I think its an excellent decision, Morrill said.
After the school board voted to approve Fineran during a called meeting Friday, he met with Johnson and also was scheduled to look at a house he might move into with his family. And though his official start date is July 1, he plans to be at the central office on Monday.
I will be here whether Im getting paid or not and start the process and get ready to transition and get to spend a little bit of time with Mrs. Denning, Fineran said. Ive got a lot to do.
Denning said she is happy with the boards decision to sign a contract with Fineran.
I think he will do well, she said. Weve talked and we will talk further. Were going to have a great transition.
Fineran said he feels honored and humbled as the new superintendent. He worked in the Peach County school system from 1988 to 1995 as a teacher, coach and part-time administrator, and he said he is looking forward to connecting with former students and colleagues.
Fineran also said as superintendent he wants to be transparent and release information to the public as quickly as possible.
Im always going to be an advocate for the Peach County school system, Fineran said. A lot of times all the good things you are doing, that information does not get out.
One benefit of moving from Evans County -- where his family lives in Claxton -- to Peach County is he will be closer to his mother, who lives in Manchester, and his father, who lives in LaGrange.
I used to be able to go home on Saturday and have lunch with my mother. Im going to be able to do that again, Fineran said. Theres a lot of good possibilities. Im looking forward to it.
