The Bibb County school board extended interim Superintendent Steve Smiths contract during its regular meeting Thursday.
Smiths contract, which originally was scheduled to end June 30, will be valid until Dec. 31. The board voted 6-1 to extend the contract, with board member Tom Hudson voting against the extension.
The extension was approved as the board continues its search for a new leader. The board voted in May to renew its search after receiving 23 superintendent applications in April. Some of those applicants dropped out of the process, and some board members wanted to tweak the superintendent qualifications. The district has been without a permanent superintendent since February 2013 when it bought out the contract of Romain Dallemand.
Some board members have said they do not want to rush the search process but plan to hire a new superintendent within the next few months.
Smith previously indicated he would be willing to remain in his temporary position through the end of the calendar year as the search proceeds.
