Every time Taylor Ferringer stepped on the mound in a state playoff game, Tattnall Square head coach Joey Hiller felt like his team was getting a win.
Ferringer delivered on his coachs hunch every single time.
You feel comfortable with the ball in his hand, Hiller said.
Ferringer won all four games in the postseason to lead the Trojans to a third consecutive GISA Class AAA championship. Ferringer, The Telegraphs All-Middle Georgia GISA Baseball Player of the Year for the second straight year, was a perfect 10-0 during the past two postseason runs.
We have all the confidence in the world in him out there, catcher Dakota Long said. We feel like we just need a run or two when hes on the mound.
Ferringer, who also played first base when he wasnt pitching, went 10-2 with a 0.82 ERA and had 90 strikeouts in 68 innings as a senior. He only walked 15 batters all season.
The Tattnall ace helped the Trojans to an undefeated mark overall in the playoffs. The Trojans outscored opponents 60-2 in their first three playoff series heading into the state championship round at Tiftarea. Ferringer found himself in a little trouble on the mound, but he worked his way out of jams and his offense battered Tiftarea in an 18-3 victory. With the bases loaded in the final inning of Game 2, Ferringer came on in relief to get the save in Tattnalls 7-3 win. It was the second straight year Ferringer closed out a state championship clincher on the mound after starting Game 1 earlier in the series.
I wanted the ball, Ferringer said. I let (Hiller) know that I wanted the ball in that situation.
Ferringer finished the playoffs with a 4-0 record and a save to go with a 0.62 ERA. He walked only four batters in his four starts.
He can be dominant, Long said. Even on the nights hes a little off, hes still better than almost everybody else.
Ferringer had plenty of interest from college coaches, Hiller said, before deciding on Darton College in Albany. Hiller said Ferringer wanted to keep his options open in terms of four-year colleges.
Ferringers performance this year was reminiscent of his junior campaign.
Ferringer didnt allow a run in 31 postseason innings in the 2013 postseason and ended the season with 37 consecutive scoreless innings. He went 10-3 with a 0.64 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 87-2/3 innings as a junior.
