A Twiggs County man has won $500,000 after buying a scratch-off ticket at a Dry Branch store.

Jeffrey Basley of Jeffersonville purchased the $5 Stacks of Green ticket last week at the M&H Food Mart, at 5220 Jeffersonville Road, to claim the top prize, according to a statement Monday from the Georgia Lottery Corp.

A lottery official said Basley would not be discussing his big win.

Umer Rafiq, one of the owners of the M&H Food Mart, said the store has been open just three months. He said Basley’s ticket is easily the biggest payout during that time.

Because it was a scratch-off ticket, the store doesn’t get a bonus from the lottery for selling a winning ticket. Still, Rafiq said, it’s exciting to have sold the winning ticket.

Basley visits the store fairly regularly, but Rafiq said he doesn’t know him personally. Rafiq said Basley scratched off the ticket at the store, but Rafiq wasn’t there at the time.
