Organizers of this weekends Macon the Stage Artistic Expo hope to build community engagement through the arts, said Shelton Land, founder of Land Mindz Inc., the nonprofit organization co-sponsoring the expo with Shadows Interactive Dinner Theatre and Visionary Communications.
Our goal is to increase participation. We see a lack of participation in cultural arts events, and we want to humanize the African-American experience, using cultural arts as a motivational and empowerment tool, Land said.
The weekend begins with a semi-formal, classic Red Carpet Mystery Theater at 9 p.m. Friday, at which Macon the Stage will be introduced to the community. From 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Next Generation Youth Segment will help youth interested in the arts identify their gifts and how they can use those talents, Land said. Lyrical Canvasses, at 9 p.m. Saturday, will combine the visual and performing arts.
All events will be held at Shadows Interactive Dinner Theatre, 438 Second St., and funds raised will benefit the Macon-Bibb County Department of Parks and Recreation cultural arts programs, which will receive a check at a closing reception at 4 p.m. Sunday.
