Macon the Stage Artistic Expo aims to build community through arts

Organizers of this weekend’s Macon the Stage Artistic Expo hope to build community engagement through the arts, said Shelton Land, founder of Land Mindz Inc., the nonprofit organization co-sponsoring the expo with Shadows Interactive Dinner Theatre and Visionary Communications.

“Our goal is to increase participation. We see a lack of participation in cultural arts events, and we want to humanize the African-American experience, using cultural arts as a motivational and empowerment tool,” Land said.

The weekend begins with a semi-formal, classic Red Carpet Mystery Theater at 9 p.m. Friday, at which Macon the Stage will be introduced to the community. From 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Next Generation Youth Segment will “help youth interested in the arts identify their gifts and how they can use those talents,” Land said. Lyrical Canvasses, at 9 p.m. Saturday, will combine the visual and performing arts.

All events will be held at Shadows Interactive Dinner Theatre, 438 Second St., and funds raised will benefit the Macon-Bibb County Department of Parks and Recreation cultural arts programs, which will receive a check at a closing reception at 4 p.m. Sunday.
