FORT VALLEY -- Tuesday marked Superintendent Joe Ann Denning’s last regular board meeting before she retires at the end of the month.

School board Chairman Jamie Johnson acknowledged that Denning faced a system in need of strong leadership when she took the job in 2011, and he said she rose to the challenge.

“We know how hard we had to work to get here,” Denning said, referring to the gains the district made in the past several years.

“If we don’t keep moving forward, I’ll have to come back.”

The board honored Denning, along with 12 other retirees, including Gail Swain, director of grants and administrative affairs.

In other business, the Peach County school board planned a vote on the district’s fiscal 2015 budget but had not done so by press time.
