Jones County Clerk Connie Mize was arrested Friday morning, accused of shoplifting at the Eatonton Wal-Mart.

Mize, 51, of Gray, was released on a $780 cash bond shortly after her arrest, according to Putnam County jail records.

A store security employee said she saw Mize scanning items at the self-checkout and putting some items in the bag without scanning them, according to the incident report from the Eatonton Police Department.

The unscanned goods totaled $115, the report stated, but the items were not listed or described in the report.

The Jones County government website shows Mize received her county clerk’s certificate from the University of Georgia in 2008 and completed her clerk’s masters education program in 2011. Mize, whose job pays about $45,000 a year, has been the county clerk since then.

She took over the post after her predecessor, Leila Brittain, was fired for undisclosed reasons.

The clerk serves at the pleasure of the Jones County Commission.

Mize didn’t return calls Monday seeking comment.
