BYRON -- Peach County school board members worked late Tuesday in anticipation of the announcement of school superintendent finalists.

An action item read by board Chairman Jamie Johnson proposed releasing information on the two candidates and voting on a final appointment June 20, but the board retired to executive session to discuss the item further and had not made a vote as of 8 p.m.

Current Superintendent Joe Ann Denning is retiring June 30.

Neither individual is an in-house candidate, Johnson said.

Other items

As an informational item, Gail Swain, district director of Grants and Administrative Services, presented information on the Safe Carry Protection Act, which goes into effect July 1. Under the new law, school districts have the option of adopting a policy that allows authorized people to possess weapons in school safety zones, school functions or school buses.

If a school district chooses to adopt a policy, it must provide training to employees, designate weapons that it will allow, institute a method to secure weapons on the persons or in locked containers and exclude employees with certain histories. Swain explained to board members that before deciding on whether to adopt a policy, they should consider the cost of weapons and training, whether volunteers would receive a supplement and how additional duties would be written into job descriptions.

School board members did not discuss whether they would consider a policy authorizing weapon possession in Peach County schools beyond law enforcement officers, but Vice Chairman Ben McDaniel expressed the need to advertise the current policies and display prominent signs in schools to avoid unauthorized possession.

In another informational item, TiSharkie Allen, school nutrition director, presented dates and locations for the district’s free summer nutrition program. From June 2-July 18, children ages 1-18 will be eligible to receive free meals at the Trojan Academy in Fort Valley, the Boys & Girls Club of Fort Valley and summer Bible schools and youth programs. Institutions interested in becoming a site for the serving of meals are asked to call Allen at 478-825-5933.

In other news, the school board approved a tentative budget for fiscal 2015 earlier this month and will vote on approval at its next regular board meeting in June.
