Two new members were elected to the Jones County Board of Education on Tuesday.

Nancy Nash and Ken Hamilton each topped a pair of opponents to win their seats.

Hamilton won the school board’s District 1 seat that had been held by Delores Moon, who did not seek re-election.

The 54-year-old electrical designer, who made an unsuccessful board run four years ago, beat newcomer candidates Tony Blash and Richard Cazort.

Hamilton received 502 votes to Cazort’s 286 and Blash’s 91.

“I’m pleased with the outcome,” Hamilton said. “I appreciate all the support and I want to thank everybody for what they did for me.”

He added that he hopes to meet with the outgoing Moon “and get her guidance ... on what to expect as a board member.”

In the District 3 contest, Nash, with 547 votes, topped candidates J.D. Collins (236) and Brady Skinner (70).

Nash, 62, who has been a teacher, an assistant principal and a guidance counselor, will take over the seat previously held by longtime board member Larry Haskins.

Tuesday night after the results came in, Nash said she was “overwhelmed, very excited ... and humbled from the support of the voters.”

She also thanked and acknowledged her opponents.

“I very much appreciate them,” Nash said. “It was a very well-run race. It was said early on that our District 3 would not be a loser with any of the three of us, and I think that was pretty right on. ... I’m excited to have the job. I look forward to it.”

None of the six candidates in the two races had held public office before.

The school board posts pay $3,600 a year.
