Monroe County voters chose two new commissioners Tuesday -- John Ambrose and Jarod Lovett.

Ambrose bested incumbent Patsy Miller, taking 52 percent of the tally to win the District 3 seat.

In the District 4 race, Lovett took nearly 52 percent of the vote, followed by James C. “Jim” Peters with about 25 percent and incumbent Joe Proctor with about 24 percent.

Ambrose, who was expecting a closer margin, said he was encouraged to know he won by 53 votes.

He said he’s excited Lovett also won.

“We can work together and get Monroe County on the right track,” he said.

After hearing the final results, Lovett said it was “kind of an overwhelming feeling.”

Between now and Jan. 1, when he and Ambrose take office, Lovett said his primary goal is to study the county’s business.

“I want to start day one as an experienced commissioner,” he said.

While Lovett is a political newcomer, Ambrose ran against Miller in 2010. He came in third during the primary and gave her his support when she faced Mike Bilderback in the runoff.

Ambrose, a 65-year-old retired railroad worker, has said he doesn’t want more tax dollars spent to alter the border between Bibb and Monroe counties. District 3 is located in south Monroe County.

Lovett, 40, is an entrepreneur who has said he feels an obligation to give back to his community and that his business management experience will help him as a commissioner.
