Its a chance to return to the glory days of elementary school for grown-ups who want to team up and participate in the Macon-Bibb Parks and Recreations inaugural Adult Field Day.
Six-person teams will compete in a series of challenges including field day classics such as the three-legged race, sack race and tug-of-war. Field Day will happen Saturday at Luther Williams Field in Central City Park.
I think a lot of people are thinking of this as more of a fun event, said Ellen Banas, who is the recreation programer for Parks and Recreation. It can be competitive of course but ... its just one day of fun things for adults to do almost as if they were in the fifth grade again, competing in field day with their class.
Spectators are encouraged to come out and watch the games, which will begin at 1 p.m.
They are just kind of fun, silly events that anyone from the community who is over the age of 18 can participate in, Banas said. This is our first year so hopefully well build on this for next year and well have more (teams) than we did this year.
Field Day will feature three two-person relays that will include a blindfolded race and a dizzy bat competition.
And then three relays that will involve the entire team, Banas said. So each person is going to have to complete one of these tasks and some of the things are a partner carry, crab walk, bear crawl, tire flips ... and there are a couple of other different things.
There also will be a water relay involving tossing buckets of water down the line of teammates to fill up a bucket at the end.
The final event is a single elimination tug of war, Banas said.
Points will be given in each event and awards given for first, second and third places as well as crowd favorite.
The event is modeled after similar adult field days in other cities and is being offered as an addition to the departments existing adult athletic leagues.
So the idea behind this is it is a one-day event for adults to participate in a team sport and there are no other commitments, Banas said. They dont have to practice, they dont have to get together and have team meetings.
