I love any holiday where you take time out of your busy routine to count your blessings. Mothers Day is one of those holidays that are so special to me.
I have a ton of things to be thankful for and since its Mothers Day, I am very thankful for all the ladies in my life. I dont know where Id be without the love and devotion of them all.
At the top of my list would be my mom, Tracie VanDeWalker. She does so much to take care of all my siblings and me. She hauls me to every event and appearance I make for my nonprofit group, Central Georgia CARES. She is always in my shadow with only one purpose in mind -- to promote compassionate care of animals. Shes the greatest.
Im also very thankful for my community. CARES and I are really thankful for a community that always supports us in our effort to take care of animals in our area. And you really showed your support in a very big way at the recent event at Moes Southwest Grill.
If you recall, Moes opened a new location on Zebulon Road. To celebrate they gave the proceeds from one day to Central Georgia CARES and Jays Hope. And of course I asked all my friends to please show up to help us.
And show up they did. Your response to this request was absolutely mind-boggling. Moes was slammed practically all day by the almost 600 people who turned out to show how much they care about animals and kids. It was just amazing to see so many people come out to spend time with us for such a worthy cause.
While Im counting my blessings, I certainly want to mention the fifth-graders at First Presbyterian Day School again. They raised more than $1,800 for CARES to begin the Unchain Macon initiative where CARES takes dogs off chains and puts them in wonderful pens. Because of FPDs generous donation, we were able to take two dogs that had previously lived on chains and provide spacious, safe pens and shelter for them. These dogs parents love them and wanted to provide for them, but they just needed a little help.
What a fantastic project, and were only just beginning. There are so many people in our area that love their pets but, unfortunately, cannot afford a fenced yard or an invisible fence. CARES is going to help these people keep their pets safe, healthy and spayed or neutered.
Yes, Mothers Day is a time to spend with the wonderful ladies in our lives who mean so much to us. Its also a time to reflect on the abundance of love and blessings were fortunate to have in our lives. I, for one, have a cup thats overflowing.
