Putnam County authorities are investigating what they say is a homicide and possible kidnapping.

Investigators went to the home of Russell and Shirley Dermond, in the Great Waters community on Lake Oconee, about 10 a.m. Tuesday. Friends of the Dermonds who had gone to the house found “what we are virtually certain” is the body of 88-year-old Russell Dermond, according to a statement from Sheriff Howard Sills.

Russell Dermond was a homicide victim, the statement said without elaboration.

Shirley Dermond was not at the home, and investigators believe she may have been abducted.

The crimes happened sometime between Friday and Sunday, Sills’ statement said.

Shirley Dermond is 87 years old, about 5-foot-2 and weighs 148 pounds. She has gray hair and blue eyes.

Anyone who may have seen her, or anyone with any information that may be related to the case, is asked to call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office at 706-485-8557.
