WARNER ROBINS -- In Mondays meeting, City Council members may hope to focus on plans for a Ga. 96 fire station, which was at the center of their planning retreat. But irate neighbors may turn out in force to oppose a proposed apartment complex.
Opposition during a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting last month was led by residents of the Spring Hill subdivision, located mostly along Wynn Place off Wellborn Road. LRG Construction Services LLCs Keith Bauer said he wants to build 100 to 200 apartments at the end of the street.
The P&Z Commission recommended denial based on concerns about traffic and neighborhood decline. An R-4 multifamily zoning is requested. Properties in that area are now zoned for residential, commercial and manufacturing uses.
Bauer appeared to have answered a request for finding other road access to the property by including property that wasnt part of the request and was part of a planned state-owned veterans center.
Warner Robins mayor and council will consider the zoning commissions recommendation but will have the final say.
Rocky Young, who has lived on Wynn Place about eight years, said residents have collected more than 200 signatures on a petition against the apartment complex.
House values are going to go down. Itd just kill this neighborhood. Theres people who have lived here 45, 50 years. When I was in the service, we never left a man behind, and were not going to leave a neighbor behind. Were going to fight it all we can, said Young, a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
The fire station is planned for Ga. 96 at Cartwright Drive. City officials, including Mayor Randy Toms, a former city firefighter, have proposed getting county funding to help respond to areas outside the city limits. The new station is expected to require about 10 firefighters, who would cost the city about $600,000 in salary and benefits.
The City Council will begin debating agenda items at 4 p.m. with a pre-council meeting. The official meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.
