Light turnout for Bibb’s first week of early voting

With nearly three weeks left before the May 20 primary election, Bibb County voters trickled in for the first week of early voting.

According to the Bibb County Board of Elections, just 1,137 voters -- an average of 227 per day -- took advantage of the early voting, despite several prominent state and local races, including the battle for governor, U.S. Senate and House contests, state legislative posts and seats on the Bibb County school board, among others.

Bibb County has about 93,000 registered voters. About 8,200 took part in early voting during last year’s special election for the consolidated Macon-Bibb County government.

Angela Mitchell of Macon said she always chooses to vote early, when possible.

“I prefer to come in early and not wait in line,” she said. “I love the atmosphere.”

Nohemi R. Brewer needed to vote early because she said she won’t be in town on election day, May 20.

“I’m exercising my right,” she said. “I’m interested in participating in the process.”

Brewer and Mitchell said they went to the polls not for a particular political race but because they wanted the opportunity to simply vote.

Early voting will continue at the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections office, 2445 Pio Nono Ave., through May 16. The office will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There also is a special Saturday early voting day May 10.
