Byron police have charged a man with the attempted armed robbery of a convenience store Wednesday which resulted in a struggle and a shot fired.

According to a release, Stephen Eugene Wade, 35, of Byron, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a felony. He was arrested Friday evening without incident.

The robbery happened early Wednesday at American Eagle Mart on the Ga. 247 connector. Police said a masked man entered the store with a shotgun and threatened to kill everyone inside. The clerk’s husband fought the robber and wrestled him outside before the robber broke away and fled on foot. The gun fired during the struggle, which was captured on security video.

Detective Melanie Bickford said the break in the case came from video recorded earlier in the day. Wade was identified as a customer who lost “a substantial amount of money” playing gaming machines.
