Superintendent Smith throws first pitch at Smith Field

Interim Bibb County school Superintendent Steve Smith makes the first pitch after the unveiling of the sign that names the baseball field at Central High School in his honor. The field was rededicated the Wednesday afternoon before the game against Houston County.

The field was originally named the Dr. E. Steve Smith Field in honor of the former Central High coach and principal on Nov. 1, 2009. School and community leaders as well as former players were on hand for the brief ceremony to uncover the sign and watch Smith throw out the first pitch. Smith tossed the ball from a shortened distance but still bounced it in the mud in front of the plate before getting it to the catcher.

"When I had rotator cuff surgery the doctor told me I'd be shorting it from now on." Smith said.

Wil Bush played on Smith's team from 1991 to 1995 and was at the field for the ceremony. Bush said, "Even thought he was the principal and the coach he was always first on the field and last to leave. He not only coached us, he taught us life lessons as well."
