Jeremy West, portraying Jesus Christ, is whipped by Jon McMullian, right, and Bill Evans, who were dressed as centurions during a "Cross Walk" Friday night at New Elim Baptist Church.

West, along with 10 other actors, made the 150-yard walk through the church's cemetery through a drenching rain. The walk is to be followed by a "Walk with Jesus" event Saturday and a sunrise service and regular service (with skit) Sunday to celebrate Easter weekend.

Pastor Johnny Baggett said the 125-member church invited six other churches and answered calls all day Friday from people wondering if the "Cross Walk" would be canceled because of the rain. Baggett opened the blinds so those who didn't want to stand in the rain could watch through the church's windows.

West said it was an amazing experience and a tremendous honor to portray Jesus.
