Buzzell: Houston Old Book Sale set for May

The annual Old Book Sale hosted by the Friends of the Library is frequently referred to as the event where “the Houston Friends build a small library in one day.”

No wonder when you consider the sale this year will consist of 3,000 boxes of books again at about 90,000 books in 60 categories. People in the past have traveled from as far away as Miami, Alabama, South Carolina, New York and many north Georgia towns to take part in this annual event.

This year, the book sale will be held May 1-3 in the Georgia Building, near the clock tower, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Argicenter in Perry. Take Interstate 75 exit 135 to the west gate of the fairgrounds. The building is wheelchair accessible with free and ample parking. An online map is available at www.houpl.org.

“The Georgia Building is such a wonderful venue for our sale,” said Pam Yates, vice president of the Houston County Friends of the Library. “People love the benches at our sale because it allows them to stay longer and look over their books.”

A sampling of what you’ll find at the book sale this year is a varied collection of local and Georgia history books including 20 volumes on the many aspects of Freemasonry. There is “A History of African Americans, Buccaneers and Pirates of our Coasts” and a “History of Camp Wheeler Georgia.”

There is an “Introduction to Georgia Writers,” “Great Hymns of the Church” and “War Baby of the South, Robins Field, Georgia.”

Additionally, there will be cookbooks, military books, author sets and individual novels, art books, biographies, single topic books and collectibles. A sampling of titles includes “World’s Best Poetry,” “The World’s Famous Orations,” “Harvard Classics,” “The Ocean World of Jacques Cousteau,” “Disney’s Wonderful World of Knowledge” and “International Motion Picture Almanac.”

Proceeds from the Old Book Sale fund all three libraries in the Houston County Library system. Proceeds given to the library exceed $186,588 since the Friends organization was founded in 2005.

The funds help pay for materials such as children’s picture books, young adult books, adult books, trade paperbacks, fiction and nonfiction reference books, audio books on CD, newsletters, summer reading programs and library staff training expenses.

May 1 will be “Day One of the Sale” from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a $5 admission at the door that day only. Friends members enter for free. On May 2, hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m., and May 3 hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free Friday and Saturday, and books are sold at half price Saturday.

The Friends of the Library is made up of concerned citizens who share the belief that a strong library is a valuable intellectual, cultural, educational and recreational resource in the community. Through their volunteer activities and fundraising efforts, Friends assist the library system in developing programs to meet community needs.
