Houston educator finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year

Houston County’s Teacher of the Year is a finalist for the 2015 Georgia Teacher of the Year.

Amanda Miliner, a fourth-grade teacher at Miller Elementary School, joins nine other teachers from across the state as finalists. The 10 were chosen from a pool of 156 applicants, according to a state Department of Education news release issued Monday.

“As usual, we had a very impressive group of teachers make the top 10,” state Superintendent John Barge said in the release. “I look forward to working with all of them to help continue the student achievement gains our schools are showing.”

The finalists were chosen based on the strength of their application essay responses. In the coming weeks, a panel of judges will hold video observations and interview the finalists, who will also give a speech at a luncheon later this month, the release states. The winner will be announced at a banquet May 16 in Atlanta.

The Georgia Teacher of the Year travels the state and nation as an ambassador for teaching. The winner also is entered in the National Teacher of the Year competition, the release states.

Miliner said she had an "overwhelming sense of shock" when she found out she was a finalist.

"To know that I am one of 10, that is a huge honor," she said Tuesday. "I am so excited about the fact that I get to represent our county and the awesome things we’re doing."

Miliner, a former Miss Georgia, grew up in a military family and moved to Warner Robins as a child. She initially pursued a different major in college but became inspired by a teacher she observed while volunteering with children. This is her fifth year as an educator.

“We have such an awesome job where every day we get that feedback of what we’re doing and how it does matter,” Miliner told The Telegraph in August.
