A 54-year-old woman was found dead of a gunshot wound Wednesday morning in her home on Winchester Circle.

Dr. Ruthanne Council suffered the fatal but apparently accidental wound to the head about 10 a.m., said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

“Her elderly mother was in the house,” Jones said. “She heard a pop and went and found her.”

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene, and investigators’ initial report indicates the shooting was an accident, said sheriff’s Lt. Sean DeFoe, the office’s public information officer.

DeFoe said the shooting might have happened when Council was unloading the gun.
