Two Bibb County students will advance to the state STAR student competition, after winning the regional competition.

Naa Adorkor Allotey, of Mount de Sales Academy, and Hemanth Sanjeev, of Stratford Academy, both won the region Student Teacher Achievement Recognition competition, among students from 20 counties. The winners were announced Tuesday during a banquet at Middle Georgia State College.

The program honors successful high school seniors and teachers who have influenced them. To qualify, students must make a high score on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent -- or top 10 students -- of their class. Students then choose a teacher to be honored.

Ron McLachlan, of Mount de Sales Academy, and Abby Schirmer, of Stratford Academy, were chosen by the two students as this year’s regional STAR teachers.

Allotey and Sanjeev tied for the district STAR award in February. Now, they will be considered in April for the state STAR honor during a ceremony in Atlanta.

The following students and teachers also were recognized Tuesday as district STAR winners: student Kevin Myers and teacher Charles Myers of Georgia Military College High School in Baldwin County; student Hannah DeLoach and teacher Holly Spires of Bleckley County High School; student Dakota Tharpe and teacher James Moore of Crawford County High School; student Ashley Denby and teacher Bersy Navarro of Crisp County High School; student Calen Dennis and teacher Selena Woodard of Dodge County High School; student Darrian Bailey and teacher Ronnie Roberts of Fullington Academy in Dooly County; student Tarun Lolabhattu and teacher Mary Pearl Whitlock of Dublin High School; student Willa Wang and teacher Sherin Hinnant of Houston County High School; student Katherine Odegaard and teacher Daniel Funt of Piedmont Academy in Jasper County; student Sarah Pounds and teacher Susan Glover of Jones County High School; student Joseph Payne and teacher Tom Sharpe of West Laurens High School; student Chelsea Rand and teacher Twinkle Sarah Samuel Mark of Macon County High School; student Hunter Smith and teacher Martin Magda of Mary Persons High School in Monroe County; student Caitlyn Hicks and teacher Lakeisha Bobbitt of Peach County High School; student Zachary Burch and teacher Larry Bennett of Hawkinsville High School in Pulaski County; student Joseph Welch and teacher Joe DeLoach of Gatewood Schools in Putnam County; student Deja Cornelius and teacher Willie Stephens of Twiggs County Comprehensive Middle-High School; student Wesley Helms and teacher Jennifer Greene of Wilcox County High School, and student Destiny Sinyard and teacher Eleanor Angles of Wilkinson County High School.

The event was hosted and sponsored by Middle Georgia State College, Central Georgia Health Systems, and State Bank & Trust Company, in partnership with the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators.
