Railroad work to close Houston-Twiggs connection Saturday

The Georgia Department of Transportation is reminding people that on Saturday they’ll want to avoid the areas around the parts of Ga. 96 that connect Houston and Twiggs counties.

That’s because scheduled railroad work will close major intersections and the entire stretch of Ga. 96 that connects the counties. A planned detour will take travelers south to Hawkinsville, in effect a 46-mile detour for a nine-mile road.

Norfolk Southern Railroad has said the work will be performed, weather permitting, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. The railroad will work to smooth out a rough crossing on Ga. 96. The railroad work requires intersections to be closed, including Ga. 96 at Ga. 247 in Bonaire, as well as the intersection of Ga. 96 with U.S. 23 and Ga. 87 in Twiggs County, near Tarversville.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said a detour will direct people along Ga. 87 south to Cochran, west along Ga. 26 to Hawkinsville, and back north along Ga. 247 to Bonaire. People can also create their own 46-mile detour to go through Macon.
