A third candidate qualified Thursday for the District 3 seat on the Macon Water Authority board.

Alan Thiese, 74, retired from the U.S. Navy and Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., joins two other candidates, Ed Hatcher and Dwight Jones, who qualified Wednesday.

The seat wasn’t expected to be up for grabs in the May 20 special nonpartisan election, but incumbent Steve Rickman resigned to run for the water board chairman’s post.

Qualifying for the office closes at noon Friday. The last day to register to vote for any office in this election is April 21, according to a schedule from Charlene Maynard, elections secretary for the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections. Early voting will take place April 28-May 16, with Saturday voting on May 10.
