Starting Monday, changes will be made to the Russell Parkway gate at Robins Air Force Base in an effort to make it faster to enter the base.

SPECIAL TO THE TELEGRAPH

WARNER ROBINS -- A big change is coming to the Russell Parkway gate at Robins Air Force Base, and officials are hoping it will reduce the wait to get on base in the morning.

Starting Monday, two outbound lanes at the Russell entrance will become inbound lanes, according to a news release.

Traffic in the left lanes approaching the gate to enter will divert over to what are ordinarily outbound lanes. A third, outermost outbound lane will be closed in either direction.

The change will take place from 6-8 a.m. on weekdays.

Col. Chris Hill, installation commander, said in the release that change should make it easier to get on base in the morning.

“We want to try something new and different to solve a persistent problem,” he said. “This is a test. If it proves to be a success, we will work together with our mission partners to ensure gate operations are sustainable.”

The Air National Guard gate will close to add more manpower to the Russell gate.

Once vehicles are inside the gate, coned-off lanes will direct them back to the normal inbound lanes or to turn left at 11th Street.

The outbound lanes on Robins Parkway will be blocked starting at 10th Street, as well as traffic from west side of 11th Street onto Russell Parkway. The speed limit between the gate and 10th Street will be reduced from 35 to 25 mph.
