I am looking forward to spring. After so much crazy weather in February, Im ready for a change.
It seems like we had four seasons all in one week during February. Im really looking forward to predictable weather with one season at a time.
We kick off daylight saving time this weekend. Although it wont be spring until March 20, daylight saving time weekend feels like the beginning of spring.
Well have longer days filled with beautiful sunshine. Folks will come out of hibernation, crank up the grills and start barbecuing.
Its also the time people get outside more with their pets. So now is the perfect time to make sure your pets are healthy, clearly identified and safe.
First, lets talk about health. Your pet needs to be up to date on all his vaccines and to have an annual checkup to make sure hes in good shape.
And, for sure, pets need to be spayed or neutered. We absolutely dont need any more puppies or kittens in this area.
Were working hard to take care of the existing pets, so please dont bring any more into this world. Spring is a great time to snip, snip, snip.
Another pet health issue that plagues the Southeast is heartworms. These things are deadly but so preventable. Please make sure your pet has a heartworm test and is on regular heartworm prevention medication.
And get a jump on fleas before they get out of control. There is reasonably affordable flea treatment for dogs and cats at most pet stores. You also can ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.
Even if you have a house full of pets, you wont have a flea problem if you keep them treated. If not, youll quickly see the pet, house and yard must be treated, and it ends up costing more money and taking more time than if you just kept them on treatment all year long.
While youre at the vets office, talk to him or her about microchipping your furbaby in addition to wearing legible identification tags. Thats a great way to make sure your loved one can be identified if hes lost.
I would suggest you also order a no-slip collar with your identification information embroidered on it. A no-slip collar is crucial for your pet.
So many pets have gotten lost because their parents walk them with a regular, loose collar. Then when theyre spooked, they back out of their collar and escape. My favorite no-slip collar is Martingale, but you can decide the one you like best. Just get one.
These are a few ways you can keep your pet in good shape for one of the greatest times of the year. Its really pretty easy keeping them healthy and safe, and its oh so important.
