Teacher recruitment fairs coming for Bibb, Houston schools

Two school districts will host events this month designed to recruit teachers, with Bibb County schools holding its teacher recruitment fair this Saturday.

The event, which introduces teachers to their potential bosses and co-workers, will be at Westside High School from 9 a.m.-noon. In Houston County, the teacher recruitment fair is 9 a.m.-noon March 22 at Veterans High School.

Shannon Dotsikas remembers attending Bibb County’s recruitment fair a couple decades ago when she was searching for a teaching job. Now, she is the employment manager and recruitment specialist for the Bibb County school system.

The recruitment fair not only gives principals the opportunity to meet applicants, but it also allows current staff members to meet potential colleagues, which is important, she said.

“Working in a team environment and working with students requires that teachers get along and work together and provide that support,” she said.

The district generally hires 250 to 300 teachers, and Dotsikas expects to hire roughly that number this year. The district might have to hire a few more because two charter schools are scheduled to open, but Dotsikas expects any extra teacher vacancies to be balanced out through attrition.

“We do anticipate there being a little bit of a difference,” she said, “but of course we won’t know the full impact of that until everything is finalized.”

In Houston County, the teacher application process is mainly electronic, so it’s important for principals and staff to meet the candidates in person, said Mark Scott, assistant superintendent for human resources.

For now, district officials must fill 81 positions due to retirements and resignations. Officials will begin working on next fiscal year’s budget to nail down the number of teachers for next year, Scott said. He expects 600 to 700 candidates to attend the job fair.

During Houston County’s teacher fair, many principals develop presentations about their schools and even bring students to meet potential teachers, Scott said.

“It just gives the teachers an opportunity to see the products of our school system and the things that we’re proud of in our school system,” he said. “And it’s an opportunity for principals to showcase their achievements.”

Westside High School is at 2851 Heath Road in Macon. Veterans High School is at 340 Piney Grove Road in Kathleen.
