WARNER ROBINS -- A special election has been set after the recent resignation of a Houston County school board member.

The Board of Elections on Friday announced that a special election will be held May 20 for the Post 7, at-large seat held by Dave McMahan. McMahan could not be reached for comment and additional details about his resignation were not immediately available.

Qualifying for the post will be held March 10-12, a week after qualifying for other county posts due to the late notice. The special election will be held at the same time as the other general primary and nonpartisan elections.

The new board member will begin his or her term immediately upon election, according to Houston County schools. The term expires Dec. 31, 2016.

McMahan was elected in 2012 after a 30-year career in the school system. He taught shop and woodworking and later served as director of maintenance and then director of facilities.

This isn’t the only election for the school board on May 20. There also will be a special election for the Post 1 seat held by Rick Unruh, who was appointed to the unexpired term of Tom Walmer last March. In addition, a regularly scheduled nonpartisan election also is being held for the seats held by Chairwoman Marianne Melnick (Post 2), Fred Wilson (Post 4) and Jim Maddox (Post 6, at-large).

Maddox recently announced he would not seek re-election.
