Education Notebook: Bibb schools to host parent workshop

Bibb County schools are partnering with various organizations to host a free workshop Wednesday for parents of young children, according to a news release.

The workshop, “Promoting Peer Interactions and Preparing Kindergarten Readiness,” is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at the Welcome Center Annex, 2007 Riverside Drive, Suite D. The workshop will offer tips and techniques that work for all children. No registration is required, according to the release.

Mercer’s Sigma Xi receives recognition

Mercer University’s chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, has been named a Sigma Xi Chapter of Excellence for 2013. The recognition is given to the top 2 or 3 percent of its 520 chapters in North America and around the world, according to a news release.

Sigma Xi is a nonprofit, member-based association of tens of thousands of scientists and engineers who are elected to membership because of their scientific research achievements. Chapters are in universities and colleges, government laboratories and commercial industry research centers, according to the release.

Children invited to enter poster contest

Elementary school students and teachers are invited to explore Georgia wildlife through the Give Wildlife a Chance poster contest.

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are encouraged to share their plant and animal encounters in the 24th annual conservation poster contest, sponsored in part by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Entries must be received by April 16. For contest information and rules, visit

Georgia College to host ‘Willy Wonka’ production

The Georgia College & State University theater department will host a production of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.” WednesdaySunday. The play originally was adapted from the 1964 Dahl novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in 2004, according to a news release.

The play will be at 8 p.m. each day at the Campus Black Box Theatre. A matinee will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $16 for general admission; $12 for senior citizens, Georgia College faculty and staff and any college students who do not attend Georgia College, and $7 for Georgia College students.

Additionally, Newell Visiting Distinguished Scholar Leon Johnson and his guest chef, Jonathan Kung, will cook some special chocolate and hold a presentation Wednesday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the theater. Bibb schools to host dual-enrollment open house

The Bibb County schools’ Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Department will host a dual enrollment open house Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Central Georgia Technical College, Building H Auditorium at 3300 Macon Tech Drive.
