Tools of the trade
Question: Why do lane conditions change after several games of bowling?
Answer: The oil on the lane will break down and carry down, causing a critical change in the reaction of the ball as it progresses down the lane. The bowling balls pick up oil and literally remove and displace oil applied to the lane surface. This reduces the volume of oil on the front end of the lane, creating a drier condition. Also the ball will carry down oil and increase the amount on the back end. Bowlers must make adjustments to compensate for these changing conditions.
