A Florida man is in a hospital and facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a Bibb County deputy then fleeing and crashing a van.

The incident began at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday with a report of a theft at Holiday Inn Express on Harrison Road, according to a sheriff’s release. The hotel manager told a deputy that a guest had stolen a bag of tools, and that a surveillance video caught the act.

As the deputy spoke to the suspect, Charles Palamara, 45, he punched her in the chest and ran, according to the release. The deputy chased the suspect on foot and attempted to use a Taser on him, but he got into a van and fled.

The deputy and other deputies chased Palamara until he crashed into a wall at Mercer Self Storage located at 3968 Mercer University Drive. As a result of injuries from the crash, he was transported to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.

He was on probation in Florida for possession of cocaine. The 2005 Chevy Express van he was driving was stolen in Florida. He was charged with three counts of theft by taking, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and eluding. He was also charged with burglary in connection with an unrelated incident.
