Macon attorney announces bid for Bibb school board

Staff reportFebruary 19, 2014

Macon attorney Daryl Morton announced his candidacy for the Bibb County school board Wednesday.

Morton, 52, said he would run for the board’s Post 7, at-large seat. Lynn Farmer, the current Post 7 representative, cannot run again because of term limits.

Morton, a former chairman of the Bibb County Democratic Party, made his announcement in Third Street Park. He was surrounded by about two dozen supporters, including at least nine current or former officeholders. The race will be nonpartisan.

He noted that he will become a grandfather in another month, and there would be “no greater gift” he could help provide for his grandchild than a quality education.

“I want to do that for every child in the system,” he said. “Nothing matters more than education.”

Morton was born and raised in Macon. He attended Furman University, then the University of Georgia law school.

He and his wife, Amy, have two sons, Matthew and Tyler, both of whom are Bibb County public school graduates.
