COCHRAN -- Khailyl West drained two free throws with three-tenths of a second left to give Northeast an 83-81 win over Putnam County in double-overtime Tuesday night in the GHSA Region 4-AA boys championship at Bleckley County.
The game was loaded with issues and referee conferences and came down to play underneath in the final seconds.
Santez Kinders shot from the right baseline bounced off the rim and into traffic on the left side of the basket. West came up with the ball and a foul was called as the clock hit triple zeroes, and but time was put back on as fans on both sides were in a frenzy.
He calmly drained both for the win and Northeasts first region title since 2008.
Putnam County had a four-point lead in the second overtime, but Northeast tied it after two drives by West. The War Eagles continued to shoot the ball rather than try to milk the clock, and Wests buckets came after turnovers.
West finished with 25 points, while Dontavious Waller and Quintavious Waller had 24 each for Putnam County.
In the girls championship, Taylor County got within six in the fourth quarter, but Putnam County held on for a 44-34.
Crawford County beat Macon County 71-61 in the boys consolation, while Monticello topped Bleckley County 42-36 in the girls consolation.
In the boys championship, Putnam Countys Quintavious Waller forced the first overtime with a last-second putback.
The War Eagles went up 74-69 in the first overtime on two free throws by Camaeron Davis with 58.2 seconds left, but the clock didnt start until after a Northeast score, about 10 seconds later.
A conference followed, and 53 seconds were put up on the clock. Dontavious Waller went to the line for Putnam County and made 1-of-2, while the Raiders tied it 11 seconds later.
Dontavoius Waller hit two free throws, and West answered with a dozen seconds left, and the second overtime was calling. Putnam County went scoreless for the final 1:51 in the second overtime.
