Mercers Langston Hall was named the A-Sun mens basketball player of the week on Monday.
Hall led the Bears to two victories as he averaged 22.5 points with six assists. He connected on 14 of his 26 3-point attempts, including eight in a win over Northern Kentucky. Along the way, Hall passed Houston Baptists Fred Goporo for third all-time in the A-Sun record books for career assists.
Mercer is at Florida Gulf Coast on Friday in a matchup that pairs the conferences top two teams. The game will air at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
Purvis earns another weekly award
With a 2-1 showing at the Florida International Classic, Northside product Sarah Purvis has earned her second straight Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week award.
The weekly award is the sixth for Purvis in her career, moving into a tie for fourth in most Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors all-time.
Purvis picked up victories against the defending Big Ten and A-Sun conference in Wisconsin and Florida Gulf Coast. She tossed a shutout against Wisconsin to open the weekend and handed the Badgers their first loss of the season.
In game two of the weekend, Purvis pitched a two-hitter en route to a 6-2 Georgia Southern win over Florida Gulf Coast. In the FIU Classic Championship Game, Purvis held Florida International to five hits and two runs in a 2-0 loss.
Georgia College baseball blanked
Giving up runs in six of the nine innings, the Georgia College baseball team lost 13-0 to defending national champion Tampa on Monday at John Kurtz Field in Milledgeville.
Georgia College fell to 4-2.
Tampa broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the second inning, adding another three in the fourth to push it further out of reach.
Center fielder Rob Hogenkamp was the lone multi-hit performer for Georgia College, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Starting pitcher Dallas Draviczki took the loss.
GISA region tournaments set to begin
The GISA Region 2-AAA tournament, which will be played at Mount de Sales throughout the week, begins Tuesday with a boys game.
Tattnall Square, the fourth seed, faces off with Young Americans Christian. The winner of that game will play Stratford on Thursday. The other boys game pits Westfield vs. Mount de Sales. On the girls side, Statford and Mount de Sales play Thursday, while Westfield faces Tattnall.
The Region 1-AA tournament also will be played in Macon at Windsor.
