A car thief got more than he bargained for when he took a truck with an 8-year-old sleeping in the back. The boy -- and the vehicle -- were recovered minutes later.

The incident happened early Sunday morning at Villa West Apartments, 4006 Mercer University Drive. The boy’s mother left the vehicle running with her son sleeping in the back while she went to take in some groceries, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The woman’s friend saw a man approach the vehicle. Before the mother could get outside, the man was driving away. The sheriff’s office said the mother said “as she ran after the vehicle yelling that her son was in the truck the driver stuck his hand out of the driver’s side window and fired a shot into the air from what she believed to be a gun.”

Deputies began looking for the truck and within minutes got calls about it at Hollingsworth Road and Log Cabin Drive, where deputies found the boy, the truckand two concerned citizens. The boy was not harmed, but was checked out by paramedics. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office crime lab is processing the vehicle.

Deputies say vehicles should never be left with children inside when an adult is not present, and keys should never be left in a running vehicle. Deputies ask that anyone with information about the incident call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 751-7500 for an on-call investigator, or call Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at (877) 68CRIME.
