A Jones County man was charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend earlier this week.

James Don Parker, 56, of Stallings Road, is accused of killing 62-year-old Alan Helmuth, who was found dead at Parker’s house early Tuesday morning.

The men lived about a half mile apart on Stallings Road, which runs off U.S. 129 between Gray and Eatonton.

Investigators say Parker and Helmuth fought some time between 9 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday, when Parker asked a neighbor to call 911.
