Massee Lane Gardens hosts Festival of Camellias

Massee Lane Gardens is hosting its Festival of Camellias celebration in February and March, the peak season for the winter rose.

As part of the festival, guests may tour the gardens, porcelain galleries and greenhouse and attend workshops for the cost of garden admission, which is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and free for American Camellia Society members and children younger than 12, a news release states.

Other events are:

• 10 a.m. Wednesday -- Master Gardener Rosa Fobbs will present a workshop on general year-round rose care.

• 2 p.m. Wednesday -- Tommy Alden, owner of County Line Nursery and an American Camellia Society judge, will give a slide show on the relationship between camellias and Southern gardeners.

• 10:15 a.m. Saturday -- Ikebana Master Kuko Hancock will instruct a workshop on the art of Japanese flower arranging. Advanced registration and a $20 fee to cover materials is required.

• 1 p.m. Feb. 15 -- Photographer King C. Davis, of Thomaston, will teach a photography workshop. Advanced registration is required, but the workshop is free with garden admission.

• 10 a.m. Feb. 19 -- Tom Johnson, executive director of Charleston’s Magnolia Plantation, will instruct an Azalea Care Workshop.

• 2 p.m. Feb. 19 -- William Koury, horticultural specialist for the American Camellia Society, will teach the latest camellia propagation techniques. The workshop is free with garden admission.

• 1-5 p.m. Feb. 22 -- Middle Georgia Camellia Society Show. The public may bring flowers to compete in the show between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. There is no cost to enter.

• 1-4 p.m. Feb. 23 -- Middle Georgia Camellia Society Show

• 1 p.m. Feb. 26 -- John Gamble, of the Middle Georgia Camellia Society, will give a presentation on “The Finest American Porcelain Art Sculptures.”

• 11 a.m. March 15 -- Guests may shop and browse fashions and accessories from Abreannes before a fashion show at noon. Models will showcase dressy, office and casual attire. A luncheon, catered by Michelle Allen Catering, will follow at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25, and advance reservations are required.
