Most of the boys basketball coaches in GHSA Region 2-AAAA anticipated a wild regular season and an even crazier region tournament.
The regular season played out that way, with Rutland sitting in the drivers seat for the top seed in mid-January. But the Hurricanes lost two of their final four games. They finished the regular season tied with Westside and Veterans, and after tiebreakers, the Hurricanes fell to the No. 3 seed.
Veterans and Westside -- 10-4 in region play -- nabbed the top two seeds and earned automatic bids into the state playoffs.
The Hurricanes must now win a game to make it to the playoffs, and they could play West Laurens -- they lost to the Raiders by 13 on Saturday -- for that playoff spot.
All GHSA region basketball tournaments take place this week, with the states state playoff bids at stake.
West Laurens will play Mary Persons and Perry will play Howard Monday in the opening round of the Region 2-AAAA tournament. The Perry/Howard winner will play Baldwin in the second round. The 2-AAAA tournament is at Rutland.
Mary Persons and Rutland locked up the top girls seeds in Region 2-AAAA, guaranteeing state playoff spots. Baldwin plays Westside and Perry plays Howard on Monday, while West Laurens and Veterans await the winners in the quarterfinals.
The Northside girls and Warner Robins boys claimed the top sub-region seeds in Region 2-AAAAA. The tournament, which begins Tuesday at Greenbrier, requires just one win to earn a state playoff spot. The Warner Robins boys play Greenbrier on Tuesday, while Lakeside-Evans plays Jones County, Northside plays Grovetown and Evans plays Houston County. The Northside girls play Lakeside-Evans on Wednesday, while Houston County plays Grovetown, Warner Robins plays Evans and Greenbrier plays Jones County.
The Peach County girls have the top seed in Region 2-AAA and will host the tournament. The Trojans already have earned a playoff spot, while Pike County will play Jackson, Southwest will play Henry County and Carver-Columbus will play Central on Tuesday. The winners of those games earn playoff spots.
The boys top seed is Carver, while Southwest will play Peach County, Henry County will play Jackson and Central will play Pike County.
Region 4-AA play begins Monday at Lamar County, moves to Putnam County before the semifinals, and the finals are held at Bleckley County.
The Crawford County boys earned the top seed, earning the only automatic state playoff bid. The rest of the seeds in order: Taylor County, Monticello, Northeast, Lamar County, Putnam County, Macon County and Bleckley County.
The Bleckley County girls earned the top seed in Region 4-AA, followed by Putnam County, Monticello, Taylor County, Macon County, Northeast, Lamar County and Crawford County.
