Southern Comfort offers just that for your palate

The country ham dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans was a favorite with tasters at Southern Comfort.


Take a former Hooters restaurant, add a family atmosphere and some country music, and you’ve got Southern Comfort in Warner Robins, an inexpensive, unpretentious little restaurant off Watson Boulevard.

To test their devotion to the comfort food of the South, we ordered the meals most like Sunday dinner of yore: fried chicken, country ham, chicken fried steak and catfish. All of the meals have the same price at lunch as they do at dinner and they average about $7.

The country ham is a sweet rather than salty slice that covers most of the dinner plate. We had a baked potato casserole with it, which had all the usual loaded baked potato ingredients baked together and was quite a favorite with our tasters. Our second side for the ham was the mac and cheese, which was rather bland, but at least counteracted the sweetness of the ham.

The catfish dinner hit the spot, with cole slaw, cheese grits and a bonus side of corn fritters. The cheese grits could have used a little more cheese and salt, but the meal as a whole was a success. The country fried steak was one of the best ones we’ve ever had -- just enough salty, tender and covered in peppery gravy. The mashed potatoes and gravy were the perfect compliment to this meal, along with homemade sweet potato casserole like we have on Thanksgiving.

The spare ribs were a little sweet but fell right off the bone. Our choice of sweet baked beans was probably ill-conceived, but the green beans balanced out the sweetness a little. The fried chicken -- the same cuts as usual but taken off the bone -- was over-fried and disappointing, but this seemed more of a cooking consistency issue than a recipe issue.

The two hamburgers we tried would be perfect for a lunch break and were incredibly cheap for what you get. The Boss burger is loaded with Swiss, cheddar, onions, an olive on top and several slices of bacon sticking out like spokes. Since the actual beef part is not the main feature, you will not be asked how you want it cooked.

The Big Mac and Cheese burger is topped with muenster, cheddar and actual mac and cheese, along with peppercorn bacon and jalapeño slices. At $4.99 for a quarter pounder and $6.99 for a half pounder, you would be hard pressed to find a more filling burger for the money anywhere.

Other items of note are the kids meals for $1.99 with an adult entree and the Lane’s peach cobbler for dessert. We also had their wings, which were meaty and flavorful but a bit pricey; and the potato pile, an appetizer of waffle fries topped with all the usual baked potato toppings for $5.99.

Southern Comfort is the right place to go when you want to feed everybody home style food without spending a lot of money. Think of it as a Cracker Barrel with a local owner and give it a try.
