A happy FPD coach Jim Turner got an ice cold drenching before he was able to hoist the winners' trophy following the Vikings win over Tattnall Square in the 2010 GISA state baseball championship series.

Jim Turner is stepping down as the head baseball coach at FPD following the upcoming season, the school announced Monday.

This will be Turner’s 25th season at the helm of the Vikings’ baseball program. He will remain the school’s head softball coach.

"The last 25 years as head baseball coach at FPD have been some of the greatest years of my life," said Turner, who said he was stepping down to spend more time with his family. "I would like to thank all of the past and present players as well as past and present coaches who have made this a great situation for me."

Turner led the Vikings to GISA state championships in 1992 and 2010, the school’s final year in the GISA. The Vikings won eight region championships under Turner, including the school’s first GHSA region title in 2013. They have made the state playoffs in 18 straight years. The string includes three playoff appearances in the GHSA, including a run to the state quarterfinals in 2013.

He had 28 players sign college scholarships – 10 at the Division I level – and had four players drafted. He’s 334-187 overall at FPD and 83-32 over the past four years.

“Coach Turner is a winner – on and off the field,” said FPD athletics director Greg Moore, who played for Turner at FPD. “His methods change games and his beliefs help change lives. We have our hands full as we consider who might be the best candidate to maintain those characteristics for our baseball program going forward from here.”
