A brief coaching update

AUBURN - Before walking out to cover this Georgia-Auburn basketball game, I wanted to issue a quick update on Georgia's search to fill the final spot on its coaching staff.

Mike Ekeler, the former Southern California linebackers coach, interviewed on Friday, as expected, and remains a candidate for the job, per a source.

But there are other candidates for the job, and something may not happen until after signing day, the source said. Georgia is busy hosting a bevy of recruits this weekend. (Though if head coach Mark Richt really wanted to pull the trigger before that he certainly could.)

Ekeler, meanwhile, has returned back to California and also has other options, the source said, but remains very interested in the Georgia job. Ekeler was the defensive coordinator at Indiana from 2010-12, and prior to that spent time at Nebraska and LSU.

And now, back to basketball. (Until more news breaks on football, of course.)
