Mama Louise Hudson’s H&H Restaurant serves up soul food to hungry guests in 2010 in Macon.

H&H Restaurant, an iconic downtown Macon eatery with ties to the city’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage, has been closed a few weeks for remodeling.

It is expected to reopen in a month or so.

“It’ll be under new management,” said Lucy O’Neal, daughter of the soul food landmark’s owner, “Mama Louise” Hudson.

O’Neal said her 84-year-old mother would still be in the kitchen when the place reopens in early March or sooner.

“Same food but just remodeling,” O’Neal said.

Mike Ford, president and CEO of NewTown Macon, said his group has been talking to Hudson for about three months “for the best way for them to stay open, continue the name H&H and continue the good food.”

The restaurant needs to be renovated, he said.

“The venting is not good, the kitchen needs a new stove, so yeah, it needs some capital infused into it to make it a good facility,” Ford said.

A potential investor plans to partner with Hudson “and give her the capital to make the changes in the restaurant that are needed, and (he) will have some business expertise she needs to manage that restaurant,” Ford said.

Ford said he would not disclose the name of the possible investor now.

“I’m very comfortable that there is a plan in the works that will enable her to stay open and enable her to be part of it,” he said.
