East Tennessee State and Mercer will see who benefits from an extra day of preparation, thanks to Mother Nature.
The regions weather pushed back the Bears visit to East Tennessee State a day to Friday, giving both teams six days between games.
Of course, Mercer will spend a fair chunk that extra day on the road trying to get through Georgias mountains to east Tennessees mountains.
Mercer is 17-5 overall and 8-1 in A-Sun play -- up to 64th, 66th and 68th in three main RPIs -- while East Tennessee State is 11-10 and 4-4.
East Tennessee States Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard is the latest A-Sun player of the week.
He averaged 18 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in helping the Bucs get going with wins over Jacksonville and North Florida. The senior from Georgetown, S.C., hit the game-winner against Jacksonville and blocked three shots against North Florida.
That helped the Bucs improve to 4-4 in A-Sun play and move into a tie for fourth with USC Upstate, both at 11-10 overall.
East Tennessee State is 9-3 at home this season, while Mercer is 5-5 on the road. The Bucs lead the series 12-6, but the Bears have won four straight.
The Bears will try for their eighth straight win, the Bucs the second victim in the streak.
The first meeting was odd, with East Tennessee State taking a 15-1 lead six minutes into the game. But the Bears fixed things and got a boost from Jibri Bryans 16 points off of the bench for the 73-63 win.
Freshman A.J. Merriweather led East Tennessee State with 20 points and nine rebounds. He is fourth in scoring for the Bucs with 10.7 points a game. Rashawn Rembert is first (fifth in the conference) with 15.3 points, but he was held to eight points on 2-of-10 shooting in the first game.
The game features two of the A-Suns top three scoring teams and 3-point shooting groups, the best two at the free-throw line, and the A-Sun leader in steals (East Tennessee State). Rembert is second in the A-Sun in 3-point accuracy at 43.8 percent, not far ahead of Mercers Anthony White Jr.
Langston Hall leads Mercer with 14.3 points and six assists a game. Daniel Coursey is tied for fourth in the conference with 7.1 rebounds.
Mercer will visit USC Upstate on Sunday, and then returns to the road five days later in a televised game Feb. 7 at Kennesaw State.
The Bears arent back home until hosting Lipscomb on Feb. 13.
