Jones County burn sends smoke to Bibb

Heavy smoke in Bibb County on Friday was from a controlled burn in Jones County.

Chris Floore, public affairs director for the Macon-Bibb County government, said in a news release the fire department got numerous calls about the smoke. The department learned the Georgia Forestry Commission had given a landowner on Upper River Road a permit to burn 400 acres, Floore said Friday afternoon.

A shift in the wind sent much of the smoke drifting into Bibb County, he said.

“There is no immediate threat to property damage in Macon-Bibb, although the smoky conditions will likely continue over the next 24-48 hours, depending on the wind,” Floore said in the release.
