Home Team Sports in north Bibb is closing Sunday

Home Team Sports, a retail sports clothing and memorabilia store that’s been in Macon for 18 years, is closing Sunday.

The business, at 120 Tom Hill Sr. Blvd. next to Hooters, carries a large variety of collegiate merchandise, especially related to the University of Georgia. The store also sells Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons items.

“It’s just that for the last three years I’ve lost money,” said owner Sam Cohen. “In this business you keep thinking that at Christmastime, it will pick up because that’s the only time you really make any money. And each Christmas has gotten smaller and smaller, and this year was my worse ever.”

The store’s lease is up at the end of this month.

“I didn’t want to enter into another lease with us going down,” he said.

Cohen said he also didn’t want to close until his longtime store manager, Brad Miller, found another job, and he has.

The store is holding a going-out-of-business sale through the end of business Sunday. Each buying customer will get a free lottery ticket, he said.

“I’m still trying to stimulate the economy,” he said. “I hope somebody hits it.”

Home Team was founded in Covington in 1994 and two years later opened at Macon Mall. The business moved to Tom Hill Sr. Boulevard in August 2008.

Cohen, 60, said the closing comes about two years earlier than he planned.

“But I can’t wait two more years,” he said.

As to what he will do next, Cohen said, “My wife says I’m going to work for her, but I’ll probably get fired. She’s been retired for about 12 years, and she’s had plenty of time to make a list for me.”
