Prep sports notebook: Houston teams swim to success

January 22, 2014

Local swim teams enjoyed plenty of success at the Statesboro High School Invitational of Jan. 11.

The Veterans boys and girls each finished in fourth place out of the field of 18 teams, while Houston County and Warner Robins took home fifth and sixth place honors, respectively, in the boys division.

Casey Hitch of Veterans won the 100-yard backstroke for the Warhawks with a time of 59.66 seconds. He also claimed third place in the 100-yard free style.

The Demons and the Bears took second and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Albritton signs scholarship

Veterans softball player Kaylee Albritton signed a scholarship last week to continue playing for the Brewton-Parker College Barons at the next level.

The school, which competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, finished 17-10 last season.

Albritton has helped build one of the most successful softball programs in the area during her time at Veterans.

Brannen named Pre-season RookieAll-American

Westfield freshman baseball player Cole Brannen was named by Baseball Factory as a 2014 Under Armour Pre-Season Rookie All-American.

Only 40 players nationwide are selected, and they are chosen based on performance at previous Baseball Factory events or by nomination from a professional scout.

Cole traveled to Auburndale, Fla., this past weekend to compete in the tournament.

Perry, Veterans, Rutland tied in region

Things have heated up for local teams in the race for the GHSA Region 2-AAAA boys basketball championship.

The Perry Panthers picked up a huge 57-47 victory over Veterans last week to keep pace at the top of the region, but the Warhawks rebounded for an 80-73 win of their own over the top 10 Rutland Hurricanes.

Perry, Veterans and Rutland are now all tied at 6-2 in region play. The Veterans win gave the team a sweep over Rutland in the regular season after a 51-50 victory earlier this year.

The Panthers should have a lot to say about who takes the No. 1 seed in the region tournament as they finish the season with a road game at Rutland and a home game against Veterans.
